I still remember the moment I decided to start my blog. I had been scrolling through income reports online, reading about regular people making thousands of dollars every month just by writing about things they knew, and I thought, why not me? That was the best decision I ever made, and today I want to walk you through exactly how to start a blog and make money in 2025, even if you have zero experience.
The blogging world has changed a lot over the years, but one thing has stayed the same: blogs that focus on helping real people solve real problems still make serious money. I have tested this myself, and I am going to show you the exact steps I took to get started.
Pick a Niche You Can Write About Consistently
The first thing you need to do before anything else is decide what your blog will be about. A niche is just a focused topic. It could be personal finance, travel, food, tech reviews, parenting, or anything else with an audience that searches for information online. The mistake most beginners make is going too broad. Instead of starting a general lifestyle blog, you want something specific like budgeting for college students or beginner home workouts. Specific niches rank faster on Google and attract readers who are ready to take action, which matters a lot when it comes to making money.
When I was choosing my niche, I asked myself three questions. Is there an audience actively searching for this topic? Are there products or services I can recommend and earn a commission from? And can I write about this consistently without running out of ideas? If the answer to all three is yes, you have found a solid niche.
Get Your Blog Set Up the Right Way
Once you have your niche, it is time to get your blog online. I recommend using WordPress.org, not WordPress.com, but the self-hosted version at WordPress.org. This is what serious bloggers use because it gives you full control over your site, your content, and your income. WordPress.com has restrictions that will limit you the moment you start trying to monetize.
To get your blog live, you need two things: a domain name and a hosting plan. Your domain name is your website address, something like yourname.com or a name that reflects your niche. For hosting, I recommend starting with an affordable option like Hostinger or Bluehost. Both have beginner-friendly plans that cost just a few dollars per month and come with a free domain for the first year. Once you sign up for hosting, you install WordPress with one click directly from your hosting dashboard, and your blog is live within minutes.
After that, install a clean and fast WordPress theme. I personally use lightweight themes because they load fast, and page speed matters for both Google rankings and user experience. Kadence and Astra are two free themes I recommend for new bloggers.
Write Content That Actually Ranks on Google
Having a blog means nothing if nobody reads it. The way people find your blog is through Google, and the way you get Google to send you traffic is through SEO, which stands for search engine optimization. Do not let that term scare you because the basics are simple.
Before writing any post, I always search for a keyword first. A keyword is just the phrase someone types into Google when they are looking for something. For example, someone looking to start a blog might search “how to start a blog for free” or “best blogging platforms for beginners.” You want to write posts that target these specific phrases because that is how Google knows what your article is about and who to show it to.
I use a free tool called Ubersuggest or Google’s own free keyword planner to find keywords that have decent search volume but not too much competition. As a new blogger, you want to go after low competition keywords first because it is very hard to rank for highly competitive terms when your site is brand new. Over time, as your blog grows in authority, you can start targeting bigger keywords.
Once you have your keyword, write a thorough and honest article around it. Cover the topic better than anyone else on the first page of Google. Answer the questions your reader actually has, use subheadings to organize your content, and write in a conversational tone like you are talking to a friend.
Monetize Your Blog the Smart Way
This is the part everyone wants to get to, and the good news is that there are multiple ways to make money from a blog in 2025. I personally combine a few of them to maximize income from every single visitor.
The first and most beginner-friendly method is affiliate marketing. This means you recommend products or services in your articles and include a special tracking link. When a reader clicks your link and makes a purchase, you earn a commission. You do not handle any products, deal with customers, or process payments. You just write honest recommendations and collect commissions in the background. I joined Amazon Associates when I first started because they accept new bloggers easily, but the real money is in joining affiliate programs for software, hosting, and digital products because their commissions are much higher.
The second method is display advertising through Google AdSense. Once your blog is approved, Google automatically places ads on your pages and pays you every time someone views or clicks them. You do not have to do anything extra. The money is not huge when you are just starting out, but it adds up over time and it is completely passive.
The third method is selling your own digital products. Once you have an audience, you can create simple things like ebooks, templates, or mini courses and sell them directly from your blog. This is where the real income scaling happens because you keep 100 percent of the revenue.
Be Consistent and Patient
The number one reason bloggers fail is that they quit too early. Blogging takes time. Most blogs do not start generating meaningful traffic until three to six months in, and income usually follows traffic. But once the momentum builds, it compounds fast.
I committed to publishing at least two to three posts per week when I started, and I kept that pace for the first few months no matter what. That consistency is what built my foundation. You do not need to write perfect articles. You need to write useful articles consistently and keep improving over time.
If I had to give you one piece of advice to take away from everything I have shared here, it would be this: start today, not tomorrow. Pick your niche, get your hosting, and publish your first post this week. The bloggers making money right now are not necessarily the most talented writers. They are the ones who started, stayed consistent, and never stopped learning.
